Community News - Call for Papers: Equal Opportunities International Conference

Work and Career Experiences of Ethnic Minority Men and Women at the Equal Opportunities International Conference, 1-3 July 2008

The Conference will provide an international platform for exchange of knowledge across all strands of equality, diversity and inclusion at work

Stream outline:
Papers welcomed to this stream will address work/career experience and opportunity issues faced by male and female members of ethnic minority groups working within predominantly (but not exclusively) western organisations. We are particularly interested in the intersectionality of factors which might affect the nature of those experiences and opportunities, i.e. race, ethnicity, culture, religion and gender, as well as other factors, such as sexuality, age and disability, which traditionally have been addressed without reference to, or inclusion of, ethnicity or religion. Obstacles faced by ethnic minority men and women, such as problems in: identifying, attaining and sustaining a mentor relationship; gaining access to influential networks, and dealing with stereotypical perceptions of themselves, are relevant to this stream. Work-life balance issues within the context of ethnic minority groups’ experiences would also be welcome in this stream.

Stream questions:
1. What are the issues around work and career experiences of ethnic minority men, women and groups? Which key factors can inhibit, or alternatively facilitate, ethnic minority group’s career experiences and career development/progression?
2. Do ethnic minority women and men face specific and/or different issues in organisations with regard both to each other and to the dominant majority groups?
3. What are the effects of intersectionality (i.e. combinations of factors including race, gender, religion, culture, sexuality, disability and age) on ethnic minority individual and/or groups’ work and life experiences?
4. Are there any work life balance issues that may be specific to different ethnic groups?
5. Do legislative interventions/frameworks and organisational support have an impact on the experiences of and opportunities for ethnic minority employees?

Those submitting will be advised whether or not their abstract has been accepted by Friday 16th May 2008

AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT

Congratulations to Tina Bass, the winner of the International Award for Excellence in the area of knowledge, culture and change in organisations.

Tina’s paper ‘Challenging Taken-For-Granteds: Teaching Students to Manage Change?’ can be accessed in the online bookstore:
http://ijm.cgpublisher.com/product/pub.28/prod.684

Paper Abstract: This paper is designed to outline a case of innovative teaching practice in a UK Business School. The author has taught the management of change to final year undergraduates for almost ten years. Over that time she has become increasingly persuaded by a) social constructionist ideas of learning 'in relation', and b) social constructionist challenges to rational models of organising, decision-making and change. As a direct consequence of this, much of the content of the 'Managing Change' module/unit is web-based. There are five lectures which are designed to underpin key points of theory, with seminars designed to encourage students to consider their actions within business scenarios. Politics, Power, Knowledge, and Political Action are taken as starting points for the process of organising.

As well as outlining positive aspects of how and why this module came to have its current form, points of tension will be highlighted. How to ‘engage’ students that are used to being passive receivers of knowledge? How to encourage individuals to openly share ideas with a Learning Set? How to get students to take control? The author doesn’t pretend to have all of the answers but invites you to share some of the experiences and insights that she has gained.

Community News - Call for Papers: International Journal of Cross-Cultural Management

Call for Papers: International Journal of Cross-Cultural Management
‘Understanding Bicultural Individuals in Organizations: Implications and Opportunity’
Cross-cultural management research typically assumes that individuals have only one cultural profile. However, given the changing patterns in the world’s workforce it is increasingly possible that more employees and managers will be bicultural. Biculturals have a dual pattern of identification with different cultures. They have simultaneous awareness of being a member of (and often an alien in) two cultures and therefore typically have more cognitively complex cultural representations than do monoculturals.

While interest by psychologists in biculturals is growing rapidly, the current state of knowledge about bicultural individuals provides more questions than it does answers for cross-cultural management. This special issue seeks both conceptual and empirical papers that address the
implications and opportunities presented by this new demographic for organizations.
