This paper examines a particular context of Brazilian small-sized companies. These companies won a public call that granted them monetary resources at least to carry out a Front End of Innovation (FEI), in NPD. As well, demand to them to contact a designer to carry out the NPD process. Aiming to understand how design services were used, a preliminary study was made. The data was collected through interviews and an on-line questionnaire. The preliminary results exhibits that characteristics of the design process implemented in these companies, does not allow achieving the determining factors for the success of NPD, which are raised in the literature. And the tendency is that they gather information informally about the pre-work that could bring success factors for new products development. In that sense, an early stage of a tool was developed, this is essentially a list of questions within a Maturity Grid, with recommendations on strategic activities for the companies’ owner-managers.
Implications of the empirical results and future work are presented.
