Examining the Conceptual Models on Knowledge Management in Indonesian Organizations: A Survey of the Banking and Insurance Companies in Central Java

The objectives of this paper and study were to examine the conceptual models of knowledge management, to examine the causal relationship between internal organizational variables and knowledge management, and to examine the causal relationship between knowledge management and competitive intensity. This study surveyed the financial environment by choosing the banking and insurance companies in three major cities in Central Java and Jogjakarta Special Province as the research population (total sample, N=201). The subjects were the branch managers of the said institutions. The results of the study indicated that the null hypothesis which hypothesized that there was no significant difference between the model and the data was confirmed. The study had also demonstrated that the knowledge management activities were part of a system that had some linkages with other variables which contributed towards the achievement of competitiveness through competitive intensity.

Dr Eupsychius Kusumadmo is an experienced academic in the area of management and knowledge management. He graduated with a PhD in knowledge management from Universiti Utara Malaysia in 2007. He is currently a senior lecturer with the Faculty of Economics in Atma Jaya Yogjakarta University, Indonesia, a private university. Prior to doing his doctorate, he was the Rector of the University for several years.

Dr. Mohmad Yazam Sharif

Lecturer, Human Resource Management Group, College of Business, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Sintok, Kedah, Malaysia

Currently an academic in the Human Resource Management Department based in the Faculty of Human and Social Development in Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). UUM is a specialised management public university in northern Peninsula Malaysia. My research works are mainly in the human resource management (HRM) and knowledge management area. Prior to joining UUM in early 1990, was a trained banker for more than 10 years. My teaching interests are in the area of human resource management, organizational behaviour and negotiation.
