The Community Mobilization in Education: Training Requirements for the Heads of Educational Institutions

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the roles and functions of the heads of secondary schools. The study also assessed the training requirements of the heads of secondary schools for social mobilization and maintaining healthy and interactive relations with the community. The sample of the study comprised of 178 heads of institutions, who were randomly selected with equal ratios of rural, urban, male and female subjects / participants. The data were collected through research assistants and was analyzed by calculating percentages and mean score. The findings of the study indicated that heads of secondary schools play three important roles. These are: interpersonal role, informational role, and decisional role. They are supposed to perform four major functions: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. They needed training in social mobilization to establish linkages with the community for the development of the schools.

Dr. Syed Manzoor H. Shah is Ass. Professor in the EPPSL department, Faculty of Education, at Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad Pakistan. He carries 16 years of teaching and research experience. Dr. Shah possesses vast experience of educational planning, projectization, educational research, inservice teachers training progrms and micro teaching skills etc. He received his Doctrate Degree in Education (Educational Planning and Management) from AIOU Islamabad, Pakistan. Dr. Syed Manzoor H Shah has been working as Coordinator with NORAD, IMTEC, UNICEF and UNESCO in their different projects. He has also developed different training modules for the tutors, senior tutors and teacher’s students of these projects. Formulation of PC-I is nother area of his interest and has developed different PC-I for NORAD, UNICEF and Governement of Pakistan.He has authored several training mannuals for the inservice training of the primary school teachers in Pakistan. Presently he is also Coordinating a Project, “Curriculum Studies and Educational Assessment” sponsored by H.E.C Pakistan.

Khawaja Sabir Hussain

Khawaja Sabir Hussain is serving as Deputy Director Research in the Academy of Educational Planning and Management Ministry of Education for the last 24 years. He did his Master in EPM, M. Phil and in EPM and presently he is completing his Ph D in the same area. Khawaja Sabir Hussain has produced more than 30 national and international research studies in the different areas of education.

Iqbal Shah

Allama Iqbal Open University, Pakistan

Assistant Professor is working in the department of Science Education Faculty of Education, AIOU Islamabad. He carries 20 years of teaching/research experience. He received his doctorate degree in chemistry education from Glasgow University, Scotland. Dr. Iqbal Shah has twelve Ph D students, three M.Phil students and dozens of M.Ed science students for research work. Dr. Iqbal Shah specialization/interest in research is in attitudinal studies and laboratory teaching learning. Presently he is working on establishing paper laboratories and studying the effect of paper laboratories on student learning.

Imtiaz Ali

Instructor, Regional Institute of Teachers Education (M) Haripur Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa, Allama Iqbal Open University, Haripur, Pakistan

Imtiaz Ali is instructor in Regional Institure of Teacher Education (M) Haripur. He carries about 15 years of teaching and research experience. Mr. Imtiaz Ali has a vast experience of inservice and pre service teachers education. He is also involved in the writing mannuals on subject of science. He has also been working in Pre-Step (USAID), CIDA, RISE USAID, AEDUSAID, UNESCO GTZ in different capacities.
