This paper focuses on the need for an exploration of academic identity and suggests the design of a research structure to help define what it is to be an academic today. Central to this paper is an acknowledgement of the changing context of academic work that locates today’s academic as one amongst many knowledge workers - a change that impacts on many of the elements essential to the academic experience.
