Through the years I have viewed education from a variety of perspectives: as an appointee of President George H. W. Bush to the National Advisory Council of Education Research and Improvement of the United States Department of Education (1991-1994); as a Commissioner of the Education Commission of the States (1987-1991); as a member of Wisconsin Governor Thompson's Education Commission for the Twenty-First Century (1989-1991); as a member of the Wisconsin Arts Board Education Committee (1989-2001); and as a board member of the Wisconsin Charter School Association (2002-present). While working in these capacities, I have seen trends toward student, teacher and administrator empowerment with opportunities for building better consensus and collaboration than ever before in our history. My opportunity to be involved in a family business has provided me with another perspective of the great need for top quality education programs.
