The interaction between the global field of the evolving knowledge management and the local culture of the Finnish Defence Forces is examined. The analysis shows how the generations (i.e. “waves”) of knowledge management have influenced the practices of the Finnish Defence Forces. Through the progressively inquiring officer students of the Senior Staff Officer Course, the Finnish National Defence College plays a role in the implementation process of the competence strategy of the Finnish Defence Forces. The inquiring students have shown in a practical manner how the new kind of practical activity is the wished final outcome of the education in the Finnish National Defence College. During the progressive inquiries “static”, “mechanic” and “aligned” military organizations turned out to be more dynamic, organic and misaligned, but potentially aligned by the decentralized human actors of our networked reality.
