In major organizational transformations, usually most of the focus is on devising the best strategic and tactical plans. Success of these transformations depends on a clear understanding of the human side of change management, which is unfortunately the most neglected area. Failure in implementing change is attributed to exactly this lacuna. Statistics regarding the failure rate of mergers and acquisitions is striking. Burke & Biggart(1997) said that in an ever increasing world of mergers and acquisitions, 75% fail at managing the change. This research paper attempts to study the role which the human resource department plays in an organization to facilitate successful change. The acquisition of Uttar Pradesh State Electricty Board’s Tanda Plant at Ambedkar Nagar, U.P.India, by NTPC in the year 2000 was analysed to study the role of HR during and after the acquisition.
